X-ray absorption and re-emission from an ionized outflow in the Type

چکیده
We report on the analysis of a short XMM-Newton observation of the reddened Type 1 QSO 2MASS 234449+1221 first identified in the Two Micron All-Sky Survey. The underlying X-ray continuum is found to be typical of a broad-line active galaxy, with photon index Γ∼1.9. Low energy absorption can be modelled by a column NH∼10 22 cm of moderately ionised gas or a smaller column of cold gas. Addition of a soft X-ray emission component significantly improves the fit in both cases. With the assumption that the soft X-ray flux represents emission from gas photoionised by the incident X-ray continuum, a comparison of the absorbed and emitted luminosities indicates a covering factor of ∼8-17%. The unusual opportunity to simultaneously observe and quantify ionised absorption and emission in 2MASS 234449+1221 is due to the relatively large opacity (for a Type 1 AGN) of the absorbing gas, which depresses the normally strong continuum below ∼1 keV. A comparison of the soft X-ray emission of 2MASS 234449+1221 with that of other Type 1 and Type 2 AGN suggests the existence of an inner turbulent extension to ionised outflows, not detected in current high resolution X-ray spectra.

We report on XMM-Newton spectroscopic observations of the luminous, radio-quiet quasar PDS 456. The hard X-ray spectrum of PDS 456 shows a deep absorption trough (constituting 50% of the continuum) at energies above 7 keV in the quasar rest frame, which can be attributed to a series of blue-shifted K-shell absorption edges due to highly ionized iron. The higher resolution soft X-ray RGS spectru...

This paper proposes a simple, empirically derived, unifying structure for the inner regions of quasars. This structure is constructed to explain the broad absorption line (BAL) regions, the narrow ‘associated’ ultraviolet and X-ray ‘ionized’ absorbers (NALs); and is also found to explain the broad emission line regions (BELR), and several scattering features, including a substantial fraction of...
متن کاملActive galaxies. A fast and long-lived outflow from the supermassive black hole in NGC 5548.
Supermassive black holes in the nuclei of active galaxies expel large amounts of matter through powerful winds of ionized gas. The archetypal active galaxy NGC 5548 has been studied for decades, and high-resolution x-ray and ultraviolet (UV) observations have previously shown a persistent ionized outflow. An observing campaign in 2013 with six space observatories shows the nucleus to be obscure...
متن کاملThe High Energy Resolution View of Ionized Absorbers in Agn
A number of emission and absorption features are expected to be visible in high energy resolution X-ray spectra of type 1 AGN with ionized gas along the line of sight (so called " warm absorbers "). Emission strongly depends on the geometrical configuration of the gas, while absorption along the line of sight does not. Absorption features include photoelectric absorption K and L edges along wit...
